The problem is he hasn't got a passport. How do we get one for an older horse??

The breeder/previous owner has the covering certificate etc so will all the breeding be able to be put on??
Thank you in advance!!!

It's really up to the seller to get him a passport, seeing as it's illegal to sell him without one and it will be illegal to transport him without one.....

it's illegal to sell a horse without one. point that out to the seller and wait til they do.

also report this to DEFRA

I bought Buddie 7 years ago as a 4 yr old before the passports came out, I had a lady come out when the new law came out and do it for £30 she was from Pet ID. I'm going to send away for a duplicate of Buddies original papers and passport that were lost along the way before I got him, I've had Bear for 2 years this year and his passport is still in his previous owners name!! He's done with the Gypsy Cob Society,

You can get your vet out to do it but it. If you go to auction now there are people on site who do them. I would be concerned that it didnt have one though

I thought it'd be a vet call out job, but didn't know if u had to contact SHBGB first or something like that. She bred him and everything, just 'never got round to it'!!!

i had one done at the beginning of the winter, i just print of the forms from horse passport agency and had the vet fill it in.

Thanks Sophie and BlueandRed, will get her to ring them!!!

Thanks Bramblebits, will check horse passport agency as that seems well easy!!!

Ah thanks MFH, was looking through their website but could not work it out!!! This seems much better, (already have 2 wiv these passports!!!) as he has good breedin we want it on the passport!!
Thanks again

Everyone is right and the seller has to sell the horse with a passport
mind you i brought a shire who i was told had a passport etc but when the day came of her dropping it off there was nothing
so i start a fresh vacc and passport i download appication forms and got the vet to sign it
why havnt they had it passported cause as a foal you have to?

Yes plase use a proper breed society and not one of these stupid horse iD only ones. If the selled bred him they will be able to get a passport for him. Might need to send in a DNA sample to verify parentage

No problems!

Also as Volatis said, far better to use an established society for your passport than some other tacky thing which will not acknowledge his breeding at all. Also, tell the breeder that it will pay them to be noted as the breeder if the horse should do well when competing in the future; many competitions recognise the breeders with prizes; it would be a shame for them to lose out! A friend of ours has won several thousand by being the breeder of a racehorse that did quite well, another has a Badminton horseshoe too for a foal they sold; very much treasured I might add!
