am about to polish my boots and gaitors for my show tomorrow (county) and was wondering what your best tips are too get your boots sparkling?

Firstly, I use saddle soap and conditioner on them, then when it's all dried in properly I either use a clear shoe shine sponge OR black shoe polish. Be careful not to put too much shoe polish on the inside of your boots though!

after you have polished them, buff them with a pair of tights- they come up really really shiney. (tip from an ex mounted copper friend of my dads!)

My dad used to do mine amazingly, but I have to them now I live on my own!

The key is buffing them after you put the polish on. You have to do it with a clean boot brush really vigourously, some people use a bone (i think!) after the brush too. Basically you cant buff them enough!!

My dad uses old tights on his shoes too. They work really well.

Step one - Shoe polish on

Step two - Take a lighter burn on the shoe polish (just run the lighter over the boot, be careful to avoid stitching).

Step three - Buff

I use Parade Gloss on mine.
Army tip,
Do 1 or 2 brown layers first then when well buffed use black then Parade Gloss [ made by Kiwi] or Guardsmans Gloss.

If you've got the time, give them a good dose of polish, don't brush off then but leave overnight for it to sink in; buff up the next day. An old towel/nappy is brilliant for buffing up.

I do this too - and am completely shameless for showing - nosebands and browbands get the same treatment - you can nearly see your face in my show noseband, I think I missed my calling to the Household Cavalry.
