Without running ideally. I am 51 and recently started lessons again after years of happy hacking and need to build up my stamina and strength. I have got better over the last few weeks but after 20-30 mins I'm a big red sweaty mess. Any ideas pref not the gym.I walk the dog and do yoga and knees struggle with running.

I do yoga. It really helps me find where I am unbalanced or tight, particularly on one side.

I sometimes squeeze swimming in too- gentle on the joints, but a good workout still.

I recently started HIIT (high intensity interval training) too. I couldn't walk straight for two days, and getting on a horse made me yelp in pain! I am no fan of really hard work outs, but actually it gives you such a buzz as sessions are hard, but short, so easy to fit into a busy routine. It is certainly good for fitness, keeping the weight off and toning up. What was great is that everyone can push themselves as hard or as little as they like, and the age range and ability was huge, so it felt like more of a team work out!

I would suggest swimming too! I can't run because of my knees and ankles and swimming really helped me out before they bulldozed my local pool :(

I do power yoga... Not the kind that's just about breathing :p Power yoga can put you in a proper puff as it's quite taxing and can be fast paced. Easy to do off videos on YouTube. I find it very good for riding. Swimming is great too. As is just riding more!

Go some exercises with a Swiss Ball. They are really good for you and will strengthen your core- great for cantering!

Or if you want to get fit with horses try doing some in-hand shows...
