I need some tips please on getting a horse to stand when mounting. My horse wont stand still for me to mount unless theres someone on the ground helping me.

Also has anyone had a horse go lame for a stride when changing direction and then do it again 30 mins later? Its odd.

Try getting on from a mounting block. Re the lameness, could be anything and is probably worth getting the vet to investigate.

Repetition. Get on, praise, get off, get on praise etc etc. As for the odd irregular stride..how old is your horse? How developed is he? I had a horse that would sometimes give a short stride but didn't worry as he was young and weak. He grew out of it, though did get vet and farrier to check as well and that was their advice. Agree with amymay though its a good idea to get this checked out.

I did the same as Luci07 has suggested with my younge mare. Line horse up at mounting block, and kept leaning over that saddle (Asif you were breaking) as soon as she stood for that praise, keep talking 'whoa/stand' then put foot in stirrup as if you were mounting normallay and reapeat until he/she stands. As soon as she did I then commenced work. It used to take me 20 mins, now i can get straight on and she doesnt flinch. Alot do everything in slow motion so the horse knows as soon as your bum hits the saddle they dont have to go off :)

Was told about a good thing to train your horse to do, once it is happy being mounted and that was to teach it to line by fences etc ( think friend saw it on a Kelly Marks episode) horse had 2 lunge lines clipped, on a head collar, one on each side, so think similar to lunging with 2 reins. she called the horse and used the lunge reins to encourage the horse to move over and square to the fence. Think I will train mine to do that as while he will stand square by a block, he is not so keen on remounts anywhere else!

Long lead rope natural horse head collar every time horse moves ask five steps back. Stop let horse think bring back to mounting block. Do daily. I now don't have a problem. I use a maxwell head collar I made my self but same design, message is clear and consise.

I have spent months trying to get darcy to stand still whilst I get on will no result. Got on the other day left reins loose on her neck and the little s**t bag stood stock still and has done since:)

I get on from a mounting block I cant get on from the ground and never would. Re the lunge line thing not a good idea he had an accident long lining and I wont go there with him. He keeps moving when I go to the mounting block and try to get on. He either goes straight on barges past me or goes sideways or backwards. Hes only 7.

Darceydoo - I dont think I want to try that as hed probably just walk off.

Ive got a dually and will try that with him.

I did say you needed to have a horse that will stand before teaching it to square up. I did have a horse who would wait till I got on the block and the pm swing his backside out. Trainer told me to back the horse up and then forward to the block. The worked. Also make sure you take hold of the outside rein and not inside. I have seen people pulling their horses head....hence the moving off.

I had a horse who wouldn't stand still when try to get on, turned out her had ringbone. Not sure if the two were connected, just thought he was trying to tell me it hurts with the extra weight.
