Hi all

Has anybody got any tips to teach my mare how to trot inhand? She hate's pressuer on the poll so I can not pull her and it needs to be done in a bridle as its for showing reason.. She is a big girl 17.1hh and a little sensitive.. I have never had any proplems with any of my others just her the big moose lol..

Any tip would be wonderful :)

Thank you in advance

Find a helper (or two!) to ask her to trot as you would on the lunge (e.g. click at her/ gently point the the lunge whip towards her/ flick it at the ground if she doesn't respond) but have them more behind her than at her side as they would lunging. Then you just have the easy job of saying 'trot' (or whatever cue she is used to to trot on the lunge) and then run along beside her preferably without using the lead much. If she goes off kind of leaning towards you it can sometimes help to put the hand closest to her on her shoulder to kind of 'push' her in the right direction. If she does the opposite and spooks away from your jogging just keep hold of the rope and keep going- she should settle with encouragement. Hopefully after a few times of this the helpers can back away and she'll get the hang of it! I bought my current horse a couple of months ago unbroken and had to trot her up for the vetting- the first couple of goes were definitely not straight lines! More like wobbles off the edge of the track :P but about 3rd go she realised what we were trying to do! So as long as she's trying for you then lots of praise- good luck showing her :)
