How to get sponsors

I have never really understood about sponsors, are they essential to get to the higher levels of competition? if so how do you get one?

I wouldn't know because I haven't got one but I'd hazard a guess you need to be enterprising and actively seek out sponsors and offer them something they can benefit from. So many people just want to "take", but I reckon they'd be more likely to get a sponsorship deal if they could "give" something for it to be worth the sponsor's time and money.
