My HW cob is on restricted grazing and his weight is fantastic at the moment, he is also just coming back into work after some time off with lameness. pretty soon his work is going to pick up and i need to change is feeding to suit (at the moment hes still just getting a token gesture handful of chaff after being ridden). He requies an energy feed as he gets quite lethargic, does anyone have any suggestions on what would be good without piling on the pounds?

In a word no! you can't feed for energy without the calories; If he's just coming back into work then he will be unfit; Get him fitter and he should have more energy :)

If he's still like it when fitter, then I would add oil to his chaff

his feed wont be changing untill nearer the end of the month to help him out when he is fitter. he needs a feed that helps give him extra energy when in full work as chaff just doesnt do it. hes 15 and I have to change his feed every summer to help him out. we are just doing it later this year due to him being lame, last year i had him on spillers slow release but i found this didnt make much difference and he still struggled but the quick release blew his brain a bit too much. its quite difficult to get the right balance.

what kind of oil would you recommend?

has anyone used Allen & Page Power and Performance? if so what did you think of it?

I tried it for a month; made no difference; but then I have a laid back 19 year old, so I've come to the conclusion that thats the way his is!

I just feed Fast Fibre with some Sunfower oil, corn oil is good too.

You could try Red Cell; I've also tried Naf's Ener G that made no difference either!

Keep him at a good weight

Get him fit and keep him fit (work work work and more work)

Do lots of what he enjoys

When he wants to go forward, isnt carrying additional weight and his body is fit enough for the job it will be a lot easier

I also feed Spillers RESPONSE and with the other things mentioned above it works brilliantly for mine

Buy a pair of spurs, you will find he suddenly has a lot more oomph. It's much cheaper and safer than buying extra bonkers food.

OMG............. That was the funniest post......... and I'm still crying from laughing so much!!!!!
However I do agree, I have a 12hh cradle stakes pony that carries a lot of weight and is very lethargic, as soon as my daughter puts on the spurs, he goes up a gear without having to use them......(by the way for those of you that will shout that a 10 year old shouldn't be wearing spurs, we have permission from our PCDC to wear them, having had a riding assesment)...

Must go and blow my nose..... tee heee....:):)
