Poor G got headbutted in the field so has a nice swollen eyelid and scratched eye ball!

Poor lad can't open his eye and has had numerous Injections and eye washes.

He's on box rest for 2 weeks as cant be out in the sun and 3 Bute a day and eye ointment.

So how do I give him Bute? Just in feed or in an apple etc? (he doesnt have hard feed atm) Also any boredom breaker ideas for while he's on box rest?

Thank you! :D

I've been putting it in a bit of kwik-beet mixed with apples & grated carrot for my boy, he's quick to leave medication but (fingers crossed) he is eating it all
:)

I give bute in feed.

Ideas for stable toys -
-hang up a ball, maybe fill with little stones so it makes noises as the horse moves it? Mine loved this
- likit in a likit holder
- one of them ball things that you put treats in and they have to kick around for it to fall out of
- a few apples in the water bucket
- stable mirror

:)

Molassed ! Molassed !!!!!!!!!!
You can't say that word on this forum, you will be burned at the stake. Lol
Lots of horses hate the taste, danilon seems more palatable but if it has to be bute thistles method is excellent, just watch which type of apple sauce you buy, cheapo purée ones are best, colemans with chunks blocks up syringe nozzle.

Ouch, poor boy! Tricking a horse into having bute is a trial & error really - don't be surprised if he doesn't eat it because it's supposed to taste foul and a lot of horses won't touch it. (There is a tastier alternative if you can't convince him!)

Try either mixing it in a bit of feed (maybe with a tiny bit of molasses if he's not lami prone / apple juice to disguise it), by mixing it in something like speedibeet, or by hiding it in bits of apple (but you do need quite a few of them as there is a lot of bute in one sachet)! Some will take it in sandwiches (jam or marmite).
If none of that works you can try mixing it with warm water & syringing it in x

Syringe it in like wormer, mixed with water.

I used to work at a stud and this was the only way to ensure that they would actually eat it... Plus if you not giving hard feed at the minute saves the extra pounds pilling on.

ahhh!!! lol if it gets it down my horses neck when needed im not botherd. :)

Thankyou! Apple sauce and baby food sound a good idea!

Being the big weirdo he is he doesn't go crazy for molasses, would rather have a handful of pony nuts!

Will also try a sandwhich as he can't resist a bit of bread!

Thanks again, hopefully he'll make a speedy recovery and can back to dressage'ing!

Yes, Tesco value is best

My mare wont touch it in feed - no matter what. I end up grounding in with pestle and morar then mixing it with water and using a syringe to get it down her throat. Have tried apples, honey, various juices etc but find that I need less water to mix if I have ground it to a powder. Has been known to be a tad messy :)
