Im just bringing Jimmy back into work. He'll be 6 this year.

At 4, he spent a few months hacking.
Last year he did allsorts, jumping, dressage, hacking, fun stuff :)

This year I think its time to start introducing lateral work. However, Ive never done it on a horse that doesn't already understand those aids.
What is the best way (and the best movement) to start with.
I don't have an arena so I cant use walls to help

Leg yield is probably easiest
And easy on country lanes from one side to the other so no arena required!
Just reward a step to the side and straighten again... what you don't want to reward is them just falling through the outside shoulder diagonally towards the hedge
You can also start with little bits of shoulder fore (helpful for getting past scary things on hacks anyway!)

I leg yield round patches of grass out hacking, practice counter bend/counter canter, all of it you can start the basics out hacking then it doesn't turn into school= hard work/boring work
