Hello! I was just wondering how people keep things interesting for their young horses. Mine has a very short attention span and gets bored very quickly. Any suggestions of fun things to do with her? Thanks in advance ?

It really depends on their age. Up til 2 I very much left my youngster out with his buddies for the most part, with the occasional groom just to get him used to stuff.

Now he’s a little older (coming up 2 and a half) we do a little in-hand work every couple of days just to keep his brain a little more occupied. It’s very much little and often, and there’s definitely a knack to knowing when to call it a day ? but he seems to enjoy it, and we’re starting to put the building blocks in place for when he’s backed next year.

I've been walking my 3yr old over poles, reversing through them, general in hand work. Today we did walking over a tarpaulin. Never do anything over about 15-20 mins as also has attention span of a gnat so I like a small amount of good quality work.

How old is your horse? Are they backed and ridden yet or are we talking about a unbacked youngster?
So kinda strange situation. 8 year old mare backed at 2 (shes a rescue I wouldn't dream of backing a horse that young) She has been sitting in a field doing very light inconsistent hacking for the past 6 or so years. Lovely personality but very stubborn. Shes a four year old in an eight year old body really! Thank you
