Ive just washed my lightweight amigo in my machine, it has an 8kg drum and is the only thing in there. Put plenty of liquid and fabric softner and vanish for the pre-wash but it still smells a bit of pee.

Any ideas how to get them smelling professionally clean other than putting it on a few cycles.....I only have 6 hours to get two rugs, boots, fly sheet and a small sheet clean, dry and out of the house, the washmachine cleaned and smelling like a house not a stable before OH gets home :o

I'm not sure what this will do for your rugs but what about using Napisan (the stuff they soak terry towel nappies in)?
I've also just started using a washing liquid which I bought in Tesco and it is specially for sports wear. Again not sure what it will do to your rugs but it is non bio

My top tip though is to use turnout rugs as stable rugs. Then there is no issue with the smell of pee

I agree with that!

This year I have started using a spare Rambo Duo and no pee smell, not wet through and if he lies on so much poo that it cakes on,it is easy to brush off. The duo has the advantage that I can fit the liners in the washing machine and give them a mid season wash and use different liners depending on what the temperature is doing.

I am just in the process of washing an Amigo turnout rug for a customer which has been used in the stable, it absolutely stinks of pee, and has gone stiff! Its also got yellow stains on and the urine will do it no good atall due to the acid in. Lets hope good old Nikwax does the trick.

Tip to get rid of the smell off stable rugs is spray a little Febreeze on the outside, seems to work and best of all, get them out on the line to blow in the fresh air....and wash reguarly!

Mine don't smell of pee, that's cos i sold all my stable rugs and just keep turnouts on in and out of stable.

results is
a. don't have to change them
b. they dry better
c they don't get stable stain
d. they don't smell of pee as the rain washes them
e. less rugs to wash in the spring
f horses says warmer in the morning when they go out as they keep the warmth they had in stable out into field with them,
g. don't have to buy so many rugs for my 4 1/2 equines

scatter a bag of "pine" cat litter in the box anyway as it does make the box smell nice and might make the rug smell nice too whilst it is dirty, let us know how you get on

White Vinegar is great for neutralising the urine. Some soap powders actually make the smell worse especially if they contain any amonia products.

I've just house trained my puppy and believe me the vinegar really worked.
