Hi all,

I'm pondering on how to manage my winter feeding for my mare.

At the moment she has Baileys lo cal (1/2 cup, just so she gets something with the other horses) on a morning, and 2 handfuls/ 1/2 Stubbs scoop Baileys light chaff with 75ml micronised linseed and supplements on an evening.

From summer, her workload has increased quite significantly, and is ridden approx 6 days a week, a mix of hacking (1-2 hours with some long canters) and schooling (lots of trot and canter work with my sharer; more walk and trot work with me), and is occasionally ridden twice a day (approx 2x per week).

She is a very good doer, so is on limited hay, and is out on grass between 8am and 4pm. At the moment she has a blanket clip and is out either naked, or with a no fill rainsheet until it gets cold.

I'd prefer to keep her cereal free, while still making sure she has enough energy for her workload; so I was thinking about swapping half of the light chaff to Baileys alfalfa blend (i.e. 1 handful of each) and adding 1/2 scoop of soaked fibrebeet.

And yes, it's anthropomorphising, but I like the idea of feeding a warm meal in winter :o

So the above keeps the sugar and starch low, but increases the DE a little bit.

What do you think? the Fibrebeet will be something very new for me, as it's a new import to France. Or I could get Speedibeet instead (also new to France). I was so excited to get samples at Europoney at the weekend... bit sad really getting excited over horse feed lol!

You already have quite a complicated food regime with your supplements and linseed added, so I wouldn't add further complications. I would keep on what you are on if it is working. If you need the extra calories to maintain weight, add a cup of veg oil and/or switch to half hay, half haylage or full haylage. Haylage would be better anyway if stabled for long periods as it has less dust and mould spores than hay.

Oh ... And nothing wrong with adding warm water to your current feed :)

If she is on limited hay then I would increase that first before changing the bucket feed, especially as she is stabled overnight.
