How to measure bit size?

Hi, was wondering if someone could explain exactly how to measure the correct bit size for a horse

I just want to check the right size for my horse as i had attached his old bit to the new bridle that ive got for him to check the bridle fitted properly and the bit looked slightly too big for him, though its the same size as the one hes has now. He has a loose ring in so has bit guards so just want to check he has the right size in and that the bit guards arent disguising the fact the bit is too big.

I am of the opinion that loose rings are better a little on the larger side, even with bit guards, it will stop the but pinching the lips.

I will stand corrected though
