I'm after a cheap, second hand saddle just to pop on my youngster to potter about in. I don't want to spend much due to changing shape, so what's the best way to get an idea of what size to get? Thanks. I would obviously get a saddler to check it before I used it, but wanted to get something very cheap my self.

How big is the horse/pony? And how tall/long legged are you? Generally 16" and under is for kids/small adults or ponies. 17" medium horse. 18" larger horse or particularly tall rider. If your horse is quite close coupled I'd go for a smaller saddle, or if you're quite short/small. There are lots of variables really!

since you could cripple your youngster whilst 'pottering around' I would have thought it far more sensible to get your saddle fitter in BEFORE you buy and ask their advice. If you tell them you want something cheap and cheerful whilst the horse grows then they would bring you some to try. Whats the point in getting in the saddle fitter after you spend money on a saddle when you clearly dont know what to buy or how to fit it?
