I'm looking for some serious alternatives to the conventional mounting block; but some humour will be most welcome too.

I damage my hip everytime I stand on the mounting block and throw my leg over. It's a b*****y nuisance as it seriously affects the way I ride. It hurts to open the right hip and to balance on the right hand side of my pelvis.

All I conjure up was an image of Henry VIII suspended aloft while the horse is led underneath.

Have you tried a very tall mounting block? We had ours raised when sister began riding again after she broke her ankle. If that doesn't work how about a hoist, the sort used for people who can't get in and out of the bath etc :D

Do a bit of pony squishing and ride something smaller...a shetty for example, you can stand with your legs spread apart and just get someone to reverse the pony under you. :D

hehe I have a similar problem resulting from a broken pelvis... someone told me to get on from a higher block and facing the front... and I have absolutely no issues now!

Failing that.... REEAALLYYY high roller-skates and a horse you can train to stand still and duck his head as you whizz into place!!!

Some of our RDA riders swing their leg forward to get on, so they sit sideways and then swing the right leg forwards and over the horse's neck if that makes sense. HOWEVER!! you need a sensible horse to do this and you should have someone holding the horse and maybe even a side-helper for the first couple of times until you decide whether it is doable in terms of balance, etc.
