To plait this nicely, do you have to separate the main first into bunches then plait?

I am soo bad at this type of plait, some people just do them effortlessly.

Any hints 🙏

It’s easy, you start behind the ears with the three amounts of hair and each bunch of hair gathered with the left hand is plaited in but you re only using half to a third it’s length to plait across…when you run out of hair to add in at the withers just plait normally and secure with a band. There must be YouTube videos on running plaits..I think if you set aside half an hour to play you ll crack the idea.

The style that boggles my mind is like a basket weave…no idea how to achieve that.

I just plait straight down as this is my horse's everyday look , but for a show I'd separate into tidy bunches first. I try to run the plait as high up the neck as possible though for every day living. But for shows this should last the day.

You start with 2 bunches from behind the ears, plait downwards as if french plaiting but only take from the left side. I find it only lasts 1-2 days before it starts falling out.

The higher you keep it on the neck, the more it’s likely to stay in. You can plait it right up at the top which looks smart (not sure if you could do this for dressage or eventing?). And it works better with a longer mane.

I like the plaits that look like traditional plaits but where each runs into the next, also good on a long mane.

Basket weave is easy you divide the mane into even sections and band then each section is divided again into two and the joined to the one next door to form a new section and so on.

I never bother to divide a running plait beforehand neither I nor pony have the patience 😅

I think I know what you mean, again quite easy start with bunches and then split the bunch in 2 and put one half in the next door plait and the other the opposite side etc, easy to show than explain.

found a video if this is what I was trying to explain.

It’s basically a french plait, you just start plaiting and keep adding bits and work down the neck. Practise makes perfect!
