How to rejuvinate rubber reins?

I have a newmarket tan bridle that's new but been stored in the garage for several years. I'm cleaning it now but even tho I've scrubbed the brown rubber on the reins it's still patchy, dull and dirty looking. Does anyone have any tips how to get the rubber looking smart and shiny again? Seems such a shame to use such manky looking reins with such an otherwise beautiful dressage bridle. Thank you :-)

I have brought up rubber to good effect using, believe it or not, Vaseline. BUT...this was on car trim - I wouldn't want to use something like that on reins! I think anything you could rub in that would help rejuvenate the rubber would have a side-effect of being quite greasy or slippery.
