So I got myself some new 90 degree stirrups (avacallo opera) which poke out a lot and twist the stirrup leather when storing. Am I going to have to take the leathers off after every ride to save them and the saddle?! Or is there a magic trick.

I just run them up but don't thread thru the stirrup so the stirrup sticks out a bit but it's not twisting my leather
Problem with that is I can’t get my saddle cover on or they twist. Hmmmmm I wonder if I should cut a stirrup hole in the saddle cover 🤔

I have the same stirrups with stirrup covers and a saddle cover. I've not run into any issues. I can't describe for the life of me how I do it because it's rather automatic now and I'd have to look! All I know is that you don't need to take them off.

Do please take a pic next time if you can! I need some stirrup covers mine fell into a ripped over bottle of hoof oil.

I didn't take out my saddle today to look at how I do the stirrups but I do know that I have QHP stirrup covers that I quite like. I've also seen ones by Busse, BR, and Eskadron. You can find handmade ones too sometimes.

I have my own very soft leathers and Sprenger stirrup irons both of which I use on any horse I ride (RS or shares). So yes, my stirrups come off every time I ride. Between rides, I hang up the leathers (no stirrups) on the back of our cellar door and treat them with Effax leather balsam.

I have the same stirrups, and use Bates Webbers so they can't really run up anyway. I take mine off every time.
Some webbers have a spare hole up at the top. Unfasten the T bar, run the stirrup up above the top hole, and put the T bar back in the top hole :) (some don't, mind)

Public announcement brought to you by the owner of the annoying combo of both Opera stirrups and Webbers 😆

(I tried oven gloves once but they were too small for Opera stirrups)

Ah, yes I'd forgotten about that. Mine do - but it's more of a faff to unhook and rehook than it is to just slip them off the bars altogether, plus it means my saddle cover fits nicely. I have a big blue IKEA bag that I keep my girth, stirrups, bridle etc in,it has shoulder straps so it's easy to carry along with saddle.
