So I'm thinking of getting a new pet of the aquatic kind. I can't afford to buy a new tank so i'll probably get a 2nd hand one. What do you clean them with to be sure there is no diseases lurking in them from the previous occupants ?

A few options:
1. Bleach - dont freak out! Use basic bleach (no added colours / detergents) very dilute then most important, rinse well and then soak and rinse using water with a good splash of dechlorinator (containing sodium thiosulphate) which breaks down the bleach. Keep rinsing until there is no bleach smell.
2. You could use white vinegar - also very good for removing the white tide marks.
3. Buy something like ZAP aquarium disinfectant (budget) or Virkon Aquatic (expensive!)

Depending on your budget, I would buy new substrate and filter media.

My advice to you is always buy more expensive fish tank.

I would like to tell you this story about my pets in the aquarium. In general, I have always had various extraordinary fish like Amphiprion and others. One day I come to a friend, he also has a wonderful aquarium with many fish, he always keep an eye on them. So he told me that you can have bristle worm right in the aquarium, it is very beautiful and unusual, so I think whether to take it for myself or not, well, like I'm reading the information and I'm not sure about it
