How to stop a yappy dog??

Little Alfie dog has a bit of a problem, in that all he wants to do on a trip to the park/walk is run round after Star barking! Now, this is all good fun, but we are becoming very unpopular with other doggy owners and people taking a nice gentle stroll in the park!!

If you yell at him he takes no notice - any idea's?? He's a border terrier BTW.

You need to distract him, call him back to you and when he comes praise him for his good behaviour.

Yes, I remember being told not to shout at a barking dog as they think you're barking with them and so continue.

make a really loud noise everytime he does it and then praise/reward when he stops

teach him to bark on command and stop on command, you'll find it easier to stop him when he starts on his own then, it works honest, we've got 10 dogs at home and none of them are constant barkers

I have a Beagle who I adore but he went through a yappy phase. I couldn't afford one of the spray collars but someone advised me to fill up a tin with old 1p and 2p coins so it rattled. when the dog was really going mad i.e. barking, or just being his mad self, to throw the tin next to him (never at him!!) the noise distracted and stopped him. I still keep the tin and if Dexter does anything wrong i.e. start chewing something or barking I just pick it up now and rattle it gently, he knows this means stop and it has worked an absolute treat for me.
