My mare has 3 spots on her hinds that are weirdly crusty. Two 5p size bits of weeping skin just above her coronet band and one smaller spot on her heel. All have formed crusty scabs that have become grit like in the surrounding hair, pulling it together.

My gelding has had similar on his face when he had a reaction to something and it stopped happening after I moved him fields. Odd thing with mare is that there is literally nothing to react to, her field is bare minimum grass and dirt! As she's a v good doer so is supplemented with hay.

Ideas what this is and how to avoid it?

Mine get scabby oozy bits on their coronets and pasterns this time of year from fly and tick bites. I usually wash once a week or so in Asda or Sainsbury’s own anti-dandruff shampoo, leave it on to soften all the scabs then gently massage off, then rinse and dry. I then usually rub in a blob of Sudocrem into each sore. I also apply Sudocrem in between if necessary just rubbing it directly into the scabby area, this usually keeps them soft and removable whilst hopefully underneath the skin is healing. I’m using deosect as well now in an attempt to keep ticks at bay.
