My horse has recantly turned 6 and he's been jumping since november and he really loves it! However he tends to refuse quite a bit, i cannot recall a single time where he has refused to the right hand side. He will always refuse to the left. He isnt over faced as he does refuse over 40cm jumps along with bigger. Once he gets going he is brilliant and will jump nearly everything but how can i stop him refusing in the first place? Thanks

Get a decent instructor and go back to basics, if the basics are done properly a horse will learn to jump without refusing at any stage unless something goes seriously wrong, polework, building up to small grids to gain his confidence then gradually building up the questions asked.
He has learnt to run out to the left probably because you are not well balanced, although there could be a physical reason so worth doing the normal checks, which a good instructor will work on during the lessons.

How experienced are you? Is it that you've fallen in to a blind leading the blind scenario and could both do with a bit of help? Otherwise there could be physical reasons for it, either way if there's someone who has experience with young horses they will hopefully be able to help.

Any horse can walk over 40cm from a standstill, so don't turn him away. Also, as suggested above, get someone to instruct you and help.
