How to stop my pony from eattng his bed?

Don't worry about him eating it, he is probably only tasting it really, if you are giving him enough fibre to eat. Horses can safely eat quite a lot of oat straw, although they can't eat as much wheat straw. In over 40 yrs of horses I have only ever had 1 give herself colic from eating her bed. For some reason she took a dislike to a new batch of hay (the others all ate it with no problem). She had refused to eat any of the hay and instead spent all night eating wheat straw. She had a very simple impaction colic which was easily treated.
If you do feel sure that he is eating a noticeable amount then the best way to stop him is to change to a different bedding.

He's on basically ad-lib hay and he can't really go on shavings because it's so expensive and I have to take out most of the bed each day as he's so messy. I don't really mind him eating it as long as it's not doing him any harm.

He should be ok if he's getting ad-lib hay. Although you might find that a shavings bed doesn't get as messy and in the end works out cheaper and easier. I was astonished when we went onto shavings, which I had resisted for a long time.

Whatever you do dont try Yukka-bed. Its a spray to "stop" them eating it.

Doesnt work and my mare got colic from eating just a few mouthfuls of straw :(

Try bedmax excel, my mares very very messy and ive found as long as you dont let it compact it lasts ages :)
