Has anyone got any tips to stop rushing?

The horse is 5 years old, and has been totally ruined in her last home. So weve taken everything back to basics, but she tends to panic in trot and she takes the bit and goes off like a plank. Walk is lovely, nice and soft. We havent got as far as cantering yet as shes not fit enough.

So far we do lots of circles, changes of reins & LOADS of transitions (which do help) however, are there any other things we could try? Im not going to rush the mare, poor thing had her brain fried in her last home, so shes had 6 months off to settle her and now shes back in work. Im hoping the fitter she becomes, it will all work itself out.

ETA:- Had teeth done, back done, vet out (when we first got her) and saddle fitted.

Hi

My cob used to rush in trot, and I was given this tip by a fantastic local horseman.

Put her onto a circle, just sitting very quiet and still, and just directing the energy with one rein. the circle doesn't have to be very big - not even 20m.

Just sit there. At some point she will relax and slow, even if it's just for a split second. The second she does, drop the rein and go forward instead. The second she starts to rush again, back on the circle.

It may take ages on the circle, and it may only be a split second that you get that relaxation and slow down offered, but take it and be consistent and this really does work.

My horse has started doing this as her new evasion technique when schooling as the spooking stopped working lol.

How my instructor has got me to deal with it is in 2 ways (we have to mix and match techniques as Tilly is too clever by half!):

1. Take her back to walk and put a halt transition in every few strides and just continue until she starts to relax and then up the pace and put a walk transition into trot until it is all calm.

2. When she starts to rush it tends to be on the long side so at every marker we do a 10 metre circle and actually today she was full of beans so whenever she felt rushy I put her on a 10 metre circle wherever we were. It did seem to work as by the end we had a lovely rhythm.

Hi there if your horse is rushing it means it's not excepting your leg ,you need to apply plenty of half halts down the out side rein has your putting your legs on keep riding her forward and work her.Plenty of downward transitions half halting each time ,She sounds like she a active horse who's a thinker so her mind going round hundread miles an hour ! so this to me say's give her something to thing about lots of changes of rein .She will eventualy except your leg but it will take time . Good luck :)
