How to stop them getting the tongue over the bit?

Hannah did her entire elementary test today with her tongue over the bit and was an absolute horror... she does it all of the time, out of frustration that I won't let her get her own way more than anything else

She is currently in a Myler 02 with a flash (done up very tightly) but this was not a successful combination. She seems worse in the KK, although I am going to try her in this bit again tomorrow just to assess the difference properly.

Please, does anyone have any ideas??? It is a horrible habit she has always been known for, and it seems to be getting a little worse at the moment

my boy did that the other day for the first time ever and he is ridden in the myler 02 aswell he is ridden with a grakle and i just tightened it but i see u can't do this may be try a grakle or i also rode him in the next myler bit up (the one with a slight port )in the hope he would find it a bit harder to get his tounge over sorry no amazing advice may be try grakle or different bit!!! as sounds like she knows she can do this think my boy was a bit surprised and uncomfortable lol

Have you tried the rubber thing that attaches to the bit? I've heard them called about 5 different things - not sure which one is right though! Not sure if they are dressage legal.

My girl did this with a flash so now ride her in a drop and she doesn't do it anymore. Also have you tried putting the bit up one hole to see if that helps.
Good luck

What I would do is try as many different combinations of bits and nosebands. Start with a single jointed snaffle and caverson noseband, then try another, and another

Have you tried a mullen mouthed snaffle? Like this...

You might have to try a LOT of combinations but you will find the right one....eventually

Obviously you want a bit/noseband combination you can compete in which rules out the grackle. I've always found that the horses who get their tongue over the bit are the ones with big tongues and/or small mouths or fleshy lips. Thinner bits can work well - as less metal in the mouth gives a bit more room for the tongue. Bits with ports obviously work well but generally aren't BD legal. If I was you I'd probably try one of the Neue Schule lozenge bits, with either the Starter or Team Up mouthpiece as they're specifically shaped to allow for tongue relief (similar concept as having a port but dressage legal). I'd also give a drop noseband a try as that'll keep the bit nice and high up in the mouth much more than a flash would.

Hannah's looking in great shape btw!

I agree Corroy being ID X TB doens't have a of room in the mouth so I tend to ride her in a thin Sprenger with a drop. Also she gets quite arsey about noseband arrangements. If it's done too tight, she will put her tongue over the bit or lean on me. So now she has a drop which is really loose. You could try shop4bits as they do a free trial.

Try a NS verbinand or team up as previously suggested, as relieves tongue pressure. You will find the same with the KK I think because that is designed WITH tongue pressure. Put the myler up a notch?

My ex boss used to ride her TB in one of these, and I'm sure she competed BD in it too, it totally stopped him getting his tongue ever the bit.

Thanks everyone... I have a NS one somewhere, a Verbibend

Also have a drop... so first thing Monday morning that combination will be tried on her

Thanks Angela... I think she is looking the best she has ever looked at the moment

Seeing as she is only 3 months since weaning, she has really toned up and apart from today has been working well

Would always steer away from a noseband having to be done up tighter to avoid evasions, so would suggest a drop, although sometimes they can tend to draw their tongues back and over. Also if you take the cavesson up a hole or two and fasten if snugger, without a flash see if she settles to that.
