As the title really

My friend has a 14.1 who she wants to jump (niether have done it before) hes brill at trotting poles, but when she's puts up little cross poles he hind or 'steps' over them in stead of actually jumping.. does he need bigger jumps?

I would imagine that he does need a slightly bigger jump (only about 40-50cm's max).

We were teaching ours to junmp and impulsion helps as well! Make sure you have him nice and forward to the jump and he will be more inclined to "jump" as opposed to step over :D

I would also advise using a placing pole in front of the jump. A novice horse will find this helps get their stride etc.

...I would say though, if both rider and horse are novice, to get an experienced person jumping him first until he is confident as jabs in the mouth or heavy landings will put him off!!

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, also, how do you know if your on the correct leg, she's about as novice as me :o

We did search for a jumping instructor although most around here are general riding instructors

A general riding instructor will be more than able to get you started with the basics .
It will also be safer for pony and rider if the jumps are set up correctly, they will be able to give you ideas of things to do between lessons.

Hi,

When I first started to lunge my New Forest pony over jumps she just stumbled over them, or if a littler higher tried to step over them and get stuck half way. I don't think she knew what to do.

What helped my pony was asking her to jump a small log whilst out hacking. She seemed to understand what a log was and jumped it well. After that her jumping at home over poles and barrels was no problem. In fact she has a lovely jump now.

Just a thought for you.
