Argh, why do they not stamp them on!! Trying to sell the oldie's saddle and I have no idea how big it is.

Bates Cair GP saddle, billet to cantle is 18", which seems big (horse is 15.1hh and it was professionally fitted) and D ring to D ring is 7". (you measure straight across the gullet right?) would that make it MW?

The length of the saddle is measured from the billet to the centre of the cantle so yours is 18". At 7" from D to D I would say this is more like my medium saddle.

See, that's what I thought, but visually it looks wider!! It's a pita because I want to put it on ebay, and no-one can remember what size it is!! :p

Does it have a factory number on it? (Should have hopefully!)
If so give bates a bell/email with the number and they should be able to tell you what you want!

Put it up with photographs from several angles with a tape measure alongside each shot for measurements.

If you don't know the measurements and what they mean, it is a fair bet that not a lot of other people do either! And that includes me!

Don'r Bates cair saddles have the removable gullets? If so then just look at the colour of the interchangable gullet & that will tell you the width. Length is from the stud to the centre of the cantle as has previously been mentioned.

Okay, length is 18", that's a start!!! Yep gullet is interchangeable (I didn't actually realise that until now, oops) where do I look to see gullet colour? The only revealed bit of structure I can find is blue/grey. I'm realising how little I know about saddles :p

I've found a serial number type thing, will email Bates, such a good idea, thanks :)

Turn the saddle upside down & you will see that you can pull the leather away from under the pommel/gullet. It is held in place by velcro. This will reveal the interchangeable gullet & you will see the colour of it. Don't worry about pulling a load away as it's designed to happen so the gullets can be changed. Once you know the colour that is in the saddle you will be able to know the saddle width with that gullet in it. It all goes back into place & is held by the velcro. Gullets are changed by pulling the leather & velcro apart & then using a cross head screwdriver to remove the gullet for replacement. It's pretty easy. When Bates saddles are bought they come with a black gullet (medium) & the fitter will install whichever gullet he thinks the saddle needs to fit.

Yellow = Narrow
Green = Medium/Narrow
Black = Medium
Blue = Medium/Wide
Red = Wide
White = Extra Wide
