I have got a welsh B I need to think about selling soon. He is unclipped, looks like a mammoth and very yellowed and generally yuck. I think he just needs to look more "proper pony" than something that has lived out in a bog all winter (which he hasn't of course but looking at him it would be reasonable to think it!)
I don't really want to clip him due to summer coat etc and I don't think his other half owner would want him clipped (she is very traditional/old-fashioned and I don't think has ever had a clipped pony).
Would one of those cotton hoods/rugs/belly sets work to just flatten the coat perhaps if left on overnight? He just looks awful at the moment, in fact small children keep going "look at that donkey" when I hack him out :(
If he does end up sticking around long enough I would like to take him in working hunter classes (with younger sister riding). With his build is he best off in normal whp all plaited up trimmed etc, or in the mountain and moorland working hunter? I can not decide whether or not to trim feathers and pull tail etc
Thank you very much for any replies.

I have added some pictures below in case that helps:

Wow he looks a cracking little pony. It's hard to assess him from those pics but I would probably try him in M & M workers first season and just see how he does - once he's trimmed and pulled there's no going back the other way!

Section bs are shown pulled and trimmed anyway so that would be the first step, you can then show him plaited or not, or even do both classes at the shows.

I feel your pain - I've got WPB with the same colouring:D I think he's smart with a neat little jump and would suit WHP, but I'm not a great showing person so my opinion probably isn't worth much! I'm starting to use a shedding blade on mine, as she's starting to moult and I will trim her beard, fetlocks, ears, wash and trim tail and pull her mane in the next month or so.

I also have a grey sec b gelding who lives out. He too is yellowy and a dirt monster, once i decide its time for a tidy up i tend to groom and groom and use stain removers. I think most people worth selling to can see past the dirt and see the animals potential. Id say keep him, hes a sweetie. Id never part with my boy and intend to drive him once my daughter has totally outgrown him.

Thank you, that is good for me then as I don't think m&m has age restrictions on it? (I think anyway, could be wrong) and therefore I can take him in the ring first time he goes out before subjecting my little sister to whatever he may throw at us! ;)

blazingsaddles - it is a nightmare colour, every bit of dust and dirt is exaggerated - he is meant to be a lot more bluey grey than this..... he is kind of mustard coloured at the moment!

All will be local showing type stuff anyway, I just want to minimise possibility of disgrace by at least looking the part - although it may turn into all the gear no idea style when silly rider on board forgets the course or similar!

Whilst B's are allowed discreet trimming - probably moreso than any other Welsh section - they should not have pulled tails, clipped feathers or manes pulled short enough and thin enough to neatly plait.

His mane can be pulled discreetly, jawline and ears trimmed but leave all feathers and tail (again tail can be discreetly tidied but not pulled and don't 'bang' the tail).

Here is a pic of one of ours - unfortunately you can't see his mane but you will see that he neatly trimmed but still has full tail and feathers;-

You are right that M & Ms have no age limit. Why not try some of your 'local' BSPS Area shows, there's no need to become a member to compete at these shows and you will find that they have lovely well built worker courses and gives you the opportunity to compete uinder a judge who really know their stuff.

Minesadouble - your pony is gorgeous! :O Can't quite see echo ever looking like that but I shall live in hope!

Thank you so much for the reply

If you enter BSPS M&M classes, you won't be able to enter the other WHP classes at that show. If you opt for the other class, you will be marked down for being M&M really.
As someone else said, you should be VERY discreet in your trimming, even for a section B. There is no age limit for M&M classes.
There are also some new WHP classes which are based on the height you want to jump, rather than the height of the pony but unfortunately I cannot for the life in me remember the name, something to do with 'Star'. They probably would be suitable for your sister, hopefully someone else will be able to tell you the name of them.
As for cleaning, I'd start with a bath and take it from there.
