Aaaarghh! How on earth do you drill it into peoples heads to come in & ignore the bladdy dogs, if they jump up turn your back on them, its really not rocket science . Daft dogs then lay on their backs with legs akimbo for a belly rub.

Dogs very very rarely try jumping up to my mum & I, but my sisters are constantly being clambered over due to winding the dogs up. Would a gun be to extreme? to the sisters obvs!

Reward them every time they show any form of doing what you want
eg turn slightly away from dog = Big reward :p

Ignore dog for a few seconds = Big reward/ lots of praise :D

I have given up trying to get the OH to not allow the dogs to jump up for a cuddle, but everytime he gets a mastiffx head to the chin/nose/mouth I smile quietly to myself and understand that the day his teeth get knocked out will be the day he gets the message :D

As the dog comes towards you to jump up, just raise your knee so it hits it in the chest. This is not a kick as the dog simply "runs into" your knee. It doesn't hurt the dog but is probably unpleasant enough to dissuade the dog from jumping up. When a dog runs up to me, I do this instinctively (as I noticed the local police dog handler did also) just as I would to ward off a threatened blow.

For training humans, I'm told "Don't Shoot the Dog" is recommended reading. Personally, I think shooting is probably a more effective alternative.

O_P, tell them, and mean it! When that fails, and it will, and this is for dogs that live indoors, I bawl at the dog, send it too its bed, and then when the visitor, says "AGHHHHH", and decides that they don't like me much, I point out that the dog got a *******ing, because THEY ignored my request to leave the bloody thing alone.

I have never allowed any of my work dogs to have anything to do with anyone else, they live in kennels, and generally by the time that they're 12 months old, they don't bother with others anyway.

I agree, it's irritating in the extreme. One deaf or stupid human can undo all the good work which you've achieved over the last few days or weeks.

Alec.

I generally find "do you want to get bitten?" works, when staring a larger dog in the face. People also have no concept of what "ignoring" means- it means just that- don't look at it, don't touch it, don't wiggle ya feet at it, don't accidentally whistle to get its attention- NONE of the ABOVE.

Problem is its family, so they tend not to take that much notice & wouldnt fall for 'they will bite you' CC I think your idea or a whip may work though!!
Jake10- I may try that one too! I could dish out bits of chocolate as a reward instead of dog treats lol
