there is a public foot path leading down a river for about 7-10 miles, you can walk with dogs ect and i have seen a few bikes on there. so here is my question, it is council land, is there anyway to go about requesting to change it to a bridle path? and if so how?

any info welcome?? thanks in advance

Definitely contact you BHS bridleways officer. Suggest you find your County Council "Rights of Way Improvement Plan" which every county council drew up under the last Government.

Hopefully, it might mention something about "creating new paths, upgrading suitable footpaths to mulit-user status" etc. etc.

How about doing a little survey and counting how many bikes use it? Then sound out a few locals about upgrading it. I wouldn't go on too much about "bridlepath" - emphasise the "multi-user". I believe that there is new Government money available for mulit-user paths. Look on the BHS website.

Maybe you could find out how many riders might be interested. If you approach the county council you need support (a petition), facts and figures about safety on multi-user paths, likely usage by horses. When you mention "horses using paths" some people get the image of the local hunt galloping through. You have to emphasise the leisure rider, safety off the roads, enjoyment of the countryside, for women and children in particular.........

You could look up The Cross Trails Trust for good ideas, e.g. they did a safety survey on multi-user paths, conflicts, etc. = answer, virtually none.
