how to use a wormer

have you used one before?
if not then a worming bit may be advisable you will proabaly be able to get one from your local tack shop.

Best thing to do is get someone experienced to help you out as horses are very good at taking the mick with wormers.

If you can't get any help - pop a headcollar on your horse. Stand facing the same way as the horse is facing (on the left side of the head) and put your right arm around the head - holding the nose down. Then put the syringe into the corner of the mouth where the bit would lie - push it as far as it will go without getting your hand in the mouth - then just press the plunger. As soon as you have done that lift the horse's head as high as you can upwards and hold it there as long as you can. This will hopefully stop it spitting the wormer out. When you let go pop a mint or two in your horse's mouth to try and take the taste away which will also minimise the want to spit the wormer out.

It is expected that most horses will spit some out - so people normally give a tiny bit more than required on the instructions.

My mum holds the head collar so she doesn't fling her head up, I put the wormer in and eject(the right word haha?) hold her head up and rub her neck for about 3/4 minutes. I do it very quick so she doesn't really know what's happening :P People have said to put it in feed if you can't get them to swallow it, but I don't know if it's as effective?

Once you have an empty syringe, keep it and wash it out. Then buy some cheap apple puree and practise "worming" with that. By the time you next need to worm your horse will be standing with it's mouth open every time it sees a syringe.
To be fair, keep this spare syringe and have puree in it when you worm. Then you can go in a few minutes after the taste has had a chance to fade a bit, and give a syringe of puree. This just makes life so much easier and more relaxed for you and the horse.
Re putting it in feed, two of mine will eat paste wormers that way, one won't. She will even go on hunger strike if there is wormer in her feed that is designed to be there.

Good advice already. I'd just add try & get an empty syringe now, not necessarily a worming one, a standard vet/ medical one will do & have a practice first with apple juice before you worm, good for you & horse
