Please can you help?

I really want to take Bruce to cross country.

How do teach a 17.3 6yo bold but slightly dim horse to go XC? I have no one to take a lead from as everyone on my yard showjumps and that is it…

I really want to take him – I think that it is really important to have a good allrounder, and I would like to be able to take him to HT and maybe ODE at the end of the season – so we don’t ‘just jump’.

Now how do I approach this daunting and rather scary prospect? Aside from donning superglued bottom pads and an American football outfit for protection.

I have never taught a horse to do xc before!
 
Is there a local riding club nearby that does clinics at XC courses? If so you could try ringing them and explaining the situation. You could also try ringing a local XC course and see if tey could help. Or try putting an advert in your local saddlery saying 'Partner needed for XC schooling'.

Where abouts are you?
 
I would advice you attend a XC clinic and say you and your horse have never jumped, they should place you in the novice group and allow you to play and have fun. Failing that speak to someone with an older horse that can take the lead and go XC schooling. I am considering the first option for my mare

Its not an ad! It is asking what to do to clear space in my tackroom? I'm not selling, so to speak....and pls PM things like that to me (if we are going to start with appropriate forum etiquette)

Agree with RC suggestion or find someone with older pony to go with you. You could do one of the horse camp weekends, one of my friends did this with her youngster and it gave har a great start.
 
O.K. suggestions, give to local RDA or horse charity as you don't want to sell them.

P.S. you seem very defensive for someone who isn't doing nothing wrong!!!
 
If there anyway you could practice at home by building some jumps yourself. Just simple ones to start like straw bales and logs etc or using showjumps with different things under and around them.

Or you could hire a xc course and just have a play - you could always take someone with you on the ground for advice.

Also i find sponsored rides good for practicing in a less competitive environment. There should be some coming up soon.
 
. Does anyone want to meet me at Tweezledown and show Bruce and I how to do xc? Promises of a bottle of Vino and lots of thanks await! I think that is the best option – everyone on my yard prefers coloured sticks – and therefore wont go, and my best friend has got not one but two metal rods in her leg, which rules her out….everyone else I know does dressage and does not leave the floor!

Incidentally, Piebald sparkle, as mentioned before, if you have an issue un related to this post please PM me. You don’t seem to be accepting PM’s, or I would have done so with this! Whilst I am at it, it should be ‘anything wrong’ not ‘nothing wrong’. Actually donating to the local RDA is a good idea. I gave them all of my horse’s rugs when I sold him. You see, my sig does have a purpose.

Incidentally if someone would kindly let me know how to put a pic up on my sig , I may just change it!
 
Where are you based FeuFolet, i am looking for company to go XC schooling as my mare prefers company
