I keep my ponies at my parent's home. They have one livery with one horse as well as my brood that I share with my Mum. Anyhow, yesterday I was on the yard early on when the livery (who's fab BTW) drove on. She has been on nights all this week and when she got out of the car she looked like death warmed up and was coughing her guts up. I told her to get back in the car and leave her horse to me til she was considerably better.

Today, after I'd done all the stuff, I met a friend for a hack who asked where the livery was (she normally would come with us) and I told her she was sick in bed and I was sorting her 'oss this weekend... my friend then went off about how she hoped I was getting paid for the extra stuff and how this livery was taking the mickey.

Am I wrong in thinking this was just a nice thing to do for someone who is obviously unwell and can't afford to take a day off work or am I just a doormat???

I think your friend is very unsympathetic :(

I would have done exactly the same as you and money wouldn't have occurred to me. What goes around, comes around - I expect your livery will be very grateful to you for helping her and you never know - maybe you will be in the same position one day and she will be able to help you out.

I'm sure she would... and I know she 'did' our muck heap last weekend which is a horrid job...

Thanks peeps... I thought I was losing the plot.

The world is a funny place. To me, that would have been a favour for a friend, which I would have been sure would be reciprocated next time I'm chucking my guts up!

However, having helped a friend out for about 4 weeks when she broke her ankle, in the middle of winter with all the snow, risking life and limb (literally sometimes!) to drive her everywhere, when I asked her to do my horses when my nan died she threw a strop! It later transpired that actually, for her, favours don't exist, and she pays for what she wants and she'd walked over me.

I think you did a lovely thing to help someone who was in trouble out. Ignore your friend.

part of the problem with todays society is the won't do attitude unless money is involved. It was a very nice thing to do. I am also sick at home at the moment and know that if I am unable to get to the stables my friend will willingly do my horse without expecting any sort or payment for it and that goes both ways as there are times my friend can't do her horses and I am more than willing to do the same for hers anytime.

No I think you were just being a decent kind person and I'm sure your livery appreciates in and hope they would do the same for you!

Yep, this - it's nice to be nice after all. Or "do-as-you-would-be-done-by" as my granny used to say...............
