How vocal are your horses?

I believe Bon has learnt to horse by watching films. He whinnies, whiffles, nickers, snorts, neighs and everything else. Mostly at me (and now he's on part livery at his staff) to come in, go out, have his bucket, his hay or water topped up, and just because he wants company and fussing.
He's only ever snorted under saddle though 🤷‍♀️

One of mine is very chatty though he’s had a wind op so he’s also very quiet bless him 🥲

The other is SUPER quiet. We had him 3 weeks before he made a sound lol. And even then I had to elicit it by playing him an audio clip of one of my (now sadly passed on) other horses whinnying enthusiastically 😂 that boy was also very chatty, he would whicker a lot and always greeted with a neigh.

We also had a little mare who had a few different ways of speaking. The most memorable was her furious, indignant shout if we happened to be a few minutes late up. She was a real character!

My little mini shetland is, despite being largely feral and not liking humans very much, EXTREMELY chatty! Never stops in fact.

Bo is almost completely silent, and when he does make a noise, it is frankly, quite weird. A very, very low sort 'huuuuurrr' sound which sounds more like a pig than a horse.

Then he tends to look embarrassed, like he's made a show of himself, and will remain silent again for weeks afterwards.

My boy is very quiet - he shows his displeasure more with head tosses and flinging legs about! He's a little more vocal at the yard we are now than he ever has been as its very small and he gets a bit of separation anxiety. I know if I hear him whinny from the field he's upset that one of his friends has been taken away. He did however shout and squeal his head off this weekend - I'd left him out in the bad weather, checked on him a couple of times from a distance and he was fine but when I went to bring him in as soon as he saw me he was shouting, squealing and careering round to show me just how cross he was! He also nickered at my niece when she went to bring him in the other day - it was a low, gentle affectionate nicker - very rare from him - and while I thought it was cute and lovely - I admit it - I was jealous!

I used to think films were sooo unrealistic until I got D 😂 there's another pony on the yard that's very chatty as well, he doesn't neigh but he's always whickering away when he sees someone. I have very little to do with him but he still greets me.

Bradley greets me most mornings with a little whinney when I take his breakfast out to him but not when he gets his evening meal. He’s 25 now and during the past year/18 months he often gives a soft rumble noise (a bit like you hear elephants doing on wildlife programmes) when eating or when I’m grooming him. It sounds like he’s very contented but no idea why he’s only recently done this.

The Appy has always been talkative - she will yell hello at me across the field in the morning. Has a cute little snicker for 'thank you' (usually for a treat or when I take her muzzle off) and also has an annoyed shout when she thinks I'm taking too long to do something.

The other two are less shouty but still pretty communicative.

The cats have all generally found me very stupid and in need of being shouted at on a regular basis

It depends on whether her needs are being met. If I turn up in the morning at a reasonable time she'll do a little nostril quiver and whicker but if it's later than she feels is acceptable, she will whinny loudly. Same with bringing in, though if I turn up during the day in her down time she'll stand and stare at me.

With other horses, she always squeals if they're within touching distance and goes back for more squealing. If her field mate annoys her, she does what can only be described as a dinosaur roar.

My cat was silent for the first year and now years later he won't shut up! We do chat back though 😅

Mine was very vocal. When I left him at the livery yard they always said he was very noisy.

He had a very loud neigh, used a lot. Once in the middle of the night I heard him neigh and I decided that someone was creeping around and he neighed in greeting. If I was late getting up to feed him I got a "where's my breakfast?" neigh. He grunted and groaned over lots of different things and when excited used to have an extraordinarily loud snort and would blow down his nose, causing consternation among other competitors.

The first time he saw sheep and lambs in a field (having come from a stud) he did a sort of little squeeky neigh as if to say "how sweet."

He has a chatter when he sees me walking up the field, other than that not at all. He never squeals, he loves other horses even though he’s not well versed (no idea of spatial awareness etc).
