How warm is a fleece in comparison to a stable rug?

Also depends on thickness and quality of fleece - my lad has a thin fleece for summer travelling, which I would say has no more warmth than a cotton or rain sheet. However his hunting fleece for the winter months would easily be the equivalent of a 100 grm stable rug.

Also echo above - I wouldn't use one long term as a stable rug as shavings would be constantly sticking, and muck would soak through as not as much of a barrier as a stable rug.

I hate fleeces used as stable rugs, I would rather use a 100g stable or wool rug. Fleece is ok for short periods -cooling off/standing on the trailer/farrier visits etc but horrible overnight – they pull back and put pressure on the wither, hair and bedding sticks – they also absorb the wet more and stink, and not to mention the static!

Agree about different thicknesses, but it's fairly easy to wash and dry a fleece!

It's even easier and quicker to wash a 100gm amigo milo .
Wash them in the morning they will back on the horse at night .
On warmth my comfort zones ( I have a horse in plaster wearing one ATM ) are as warm as a decent medium weight but my thinnest ones are less than 100 .

Thank you! I've been using turnouts in the stable overnight but I took it off my old girl last night because it was really heavy with being wet. My stable rugs were still in the garage so I'd popped her weatherbeeta fleece on overnight but I was worried she might be chilly - it actually seems quite warm even with the rain.

And then I wondered...hence my question! Although I'm sure I've got an Amigo fleece liner that was sold as being 400gm!

Fleeces come in different weights and some are warmer than others. I love them both for me and my horse. They wash lovely and come out of the machine practically dry. Just need half an hour on an airer to dry the thicker part around the neck area. I only use the ones with the "cuff" around the neck, these are designed so they don't pull back on the withers. Someone has said about bedding sticking-never had this problem but I use cardboard.

Couldnt agree more. Often see people's ponies wearing them as rugs on warmer nights. They always pull back and end up tight over the chest and withers.

I find the weatherbeeta ones are not as bad for pulling back as they have full satin lining on the front end so the neck part isn't actually that stretchy. Also (although might be too warm then) a quilted shoulder protector stops them pulling back.

Some fleece rugs are good quality, and if they fit correctly should not pull back or go tight, I personally prefer horsewares rugs with the liner system, so you can layer the rug for warmth, and the liners are light and will go in a large washer, they don't move and are silky to the skin and quilted so are light but still warm.

Agree with Conniegirl, my thicker PE fleeces never move or pull back and my two mares are about as fussy as you can get rug fit wise. They are also very warm.

The horseware fleece liner is sold as 400g, I had one but wasn't sure how they came up with 400g as seemed like a normal fleece to me! Plus it was awful so I sold it on!
