How were you with your first horse?

I'm feeling like a bit of a fool at the moment. I started horse sharing with a girl I know had a few trial days and went really well, when I started going to the yard by myself a few things went wrong - on my first morning I didn't hook the gate properly and a horse got out, it was caught and wasn't an issue, but it was so embarrassing, the yard owner was actually quite kind about it but I could have died of embarrassed. :o:o:o

I also had a bit of trouble tacking up my first time, I couldn't for the life of me get the bridle on and had to call for help :o Luckily nothing else has has happened yet, and I've been very careful with the gate!

Since that first week I'm better at tacking up and I've got used to all the chores. Infact I love it! The fact that the horse is very very lovely, a black mare, she's such a sweet heart couldn't have asked for a nicer horse.

How was your first horse experience?
 
These things happen to everyone so don't worry. I had a hilarious moment a couple of weeks ago where I got the reins tangled up in a martingale and was getting all confused about how to untangle them. It was very simple in the end but I only realised that after undoing the reins....*face palm*

I can't remember much of my first horsey experiences as I was 2! However there have been many numpty incidents over the years. It took me many years to manage to put a bridle back together properly. The best thing to do is to take them in your stride. Anyone who gets snooty with you frankly isn't worth it.

ETA I hope you continue to have lots of fun with your mare!
 
Trust me it comes with practice, especially tacking up. Don't put too much pressure on your self, you aren't going to know how to do it confidently until you've done it a few times. Don't be afraid to ask questions...we all had to start somewhere x
 
@ Apercrumbie, I will have fun with her, she's so lovely, I'm having riding lessons on her since I'm still a novice, and she's such a lovely ride, quite a fast horse too, very fast trot!

@ victoria1980x, my mum said the same thing, I came home in tears when that horse got out, I said to my mum they might never let me back! Once the yard owner spoke to me and wasn't angry I been okay,but at the time I thought it was the end of the world! so silly when I look back :o I do find tacking up hard but then they never got me to do it at riding school so I guess its one of those things you have to learn as you go :)
 
good for you for biting the bullett and getting your first horse....dont worry, the more you do it the easier it will get..we all started at the beginning once......just enjoy your horse!!!......any pics?

That's jade the owner of the horse in the pink coat :) The horses name is daisy (sorry for the huge pictures!) I haven't taken many othr pictures (the ones on my mobile come out bit blurry :()

was grooming her went to get a body brush out of the grooming kit, turned around and she has her nose flat on the wall! I did get her to back up a little, didn't look very comfy! silly pony :)
 
Don't worry, anyone worth knowing will be happy to help you when you ask for it. When I first bought my pony four years ago I thought I knew a lot, until I was thrown in at the deep end and had to rely on far more knowledgable people around me every time anything happened!
Four years on I know much more but still know when to ask for advice! However, I'm also more than happy to help others around me when they ask for it - we all start somewhere.
