Can someone please explain to me how a grazing muzzle would break under pressure/force?

Which bit of it would give first on a bucket style muzzle?

Basically I found my muzzle in the middle of my field this morning, broken in a very strange way. I am not sure if horse has done this, or a human.

Thank you

I have had two break by a pony hooking it in things, once it kind of exploded into many pieces (from the muzzle I think), the other time the velcro didn't come undone and the headpiece was pulled from the muzzle.

I've had a shires bucket style muzzle break, it's got double velcro on the head piece but it didn't give, she still had the head collar part on but the bucket part was hanging on a gate. I think she must have got it caught when rubbing herself on the wooden post & paniced when she got caught. Fortunately it came part without doing herself any damage.

I had it repaired but now I only used a single peice of velcro, so hopefully it will come apart next time.

Thanks. What is strange is that the metal ring that sits on the side of the face has obviously broken because the bits of halter that attach to it are not broken. The metal ring and the bit of halter that goes over the head are missing.

Very strange.

IF the metal ring is pressed together for safety then it's failed according to design. If the metal ring was welded together then the horse has had to exert considerable pressure and I'd be looking out for injuries and not using that type of grazing muzzle again.

Silly question, but how do I tell if it's been pressed or welded?

I can see the join line and have tried to pull the other ring apart but can't - but I'm not that strong!

It was a Roma muzzle if anyone knows?

If it's pressed together it will look like an O with a tiny break across it. If it's welded there will be a roughish circle across it.

Metal rings, clips etc often have structural weaknesses (not designed in), I have bought many lead rops that have broken at the metal clip, it is just poor quality but in this case it was without doubt a good thing that it broke!

The other horses were completely naked!

Yes I am very concerned about it. I have put a Shires muzzle back on him and now sitting here worrying :(

We've had a couple of strange things happen in the area in regards to rugs, muzzles, head collars etc. I am actually hoping it's someone who has damaged it like this, rather than my horse.

I looked everywhere for the missing piece of the muzzle too but cannot find it.

I think its quite possible that the muzzle got caught on something. I had a field safe head collar with velcro strips, that failed to break when my horse got stuck on a hedge or fence.
The actual webbing ripped through in 2 places, not on the seams either. It must have taken immense force to break free. The horse was fortunate not to have any apparent injuries.

I'm not keen on the rings attached to the bucket, webbing muzzles, my horse got his caught on the gate a few days ago and pulled the gate off its hinges leaving him free to get out onto the road.

Gosh, glad your horse is ok.

I'm actually looking forward to the winter!
