Just thinking to the future, whatever the outcome of Stars scans etc are next week. How do these types of issues affect the price of comp horses, would you expect the price to be considerably lower???

Also what about breeding from mares with these issues - can it be done?

Thanks guys

Honestly I think it makes them meat money.

Would you buy a horse with either of these problems? Obviously it depends on the horse and what level it was competing at, how long it has been sound since being cured and how lucky you are in finding someone who doesn't really care about it and is willing to take a risk. I think you would need to be competing at a very high level for say 5 years or so to get more.

As to breeding, my vet told me to choose a stallion without upright hocks as upright conformation seems to be a contributing factor to PSD - not sure about hock problems.

You don't know yet if that is what is wrong with Star though, so fingers crossed.

Put it ths way ... I was offered my then 6/7yo 16.2hh gelding, very well bred. BSJA winnings, won 2 x PN and been Novice for £1 due to him suffereing from PSD ..
He was originally advertised at 2K with no takers

Ouch....crap....looks like she's staying with me forever then lol!! Just my luck with horses..my last mare ended up having problems and ended up selling her 'cheap' aswell. Such a shame as she was/is worth a decent price before!!!

I know i dont know the outcome as yet and am trying to stay posistive but hey ho..:(

depends if you wanted to be honest with the buyer. if horse came sound then there would be no residual signs and would likely pass a vetting (with PSD at least, possibly wouldn't pass flexion tests with spavin). if you wanted the horse to be passed on honestly, then i have to say not worth much at all, maybe £1500-2k max IF it was an advanced schoolmaster as my friend has one of these who had PSD and was denerved, but now it causes him no probs and she got a bargain.
