O/h & I are looking to buy a small tractor/biggish garden tractor to harrow 2 1/2 acres, pull a poo vacuum & level & roll the manege. I've got my eye on a couple on e bay... but how would I go about collecting them?? Presumably they'd be too big & heavy for the lorry?

They prob won't be licensed for use on the road which is fine cos I won't ever want to take it off the yard, and in any case I wouldn't fancy driving a tractor any distance... Are there specialist firms who pick up & deliver tractors & would it be expensive? If it's going to cost £££££ to get them delivered, a cheap tractor won't be so cheap...

All ideas appreciated cos I'm completely new to tractor buying!!! (altho my grandad was a farmer & would be horrified by my ignorance...)

Watch out with large mower/garden stuff - most of them are belt driven and the belts burn out on ours when we try to harrow the arena/field - it's fine for fertilising/seeding but wouldn't expect it to pull any weight/drag anything - ours is biggish BHP too

To collect, a trailer an appropritae vehicle unless you have a lorry with no step from the ramp onto the box

Thanks for the tip, Miller. I will need it to pull a heavy roller as I've got a cushionride surface which gets very deep without being compressed. I'm trying to get something that's old, solid & scruffy that doesn't scream 'nick me' - the best one I've seen so far is in Newcastle...

Maybe we need to get more of a proper tractor, but a small one - I've already discounted the feeble ones designed for people with big lawns.

Unfortunately we don't have a vehicle that could tow a trailer - 2 'normal' cars without tow bars & a 7.5 ton lorry. The lorry does have about a six inch step from ramp to box.

Looks like I might be making a 3 month road trip down from Newcastle...

Ooohhh thank you Thistle. Maybe we could get all our equipment at once from the Cambridge sale? Would be a lot easier than traipsing around the country...

O/h is getting v excited about having a Boy's Toy, so I'm hoping that he'll insist on doing all the rolling, harrowing etc & I won't have to lift a finger...

Oh yes - we used to have the horses on the chicken farm in Baldock next to the car boot sale when my grandad was alive & we used to drive past there every week when we did lessons in Walkern.

I'd forgotten about the John Deere place. Not sure they'd have something old/scruffy/unlikely to be stolen enough, but it's got to be worth a ring.

They have a sales list on their website, look in the groundcare section for compacts. Not a lot under 10k though

We have a 1964 Massey Fergie, a harrow and a topper, just trying to persuade OH I need a roller too.

It's old and tatty but a great workhorse.

Hi yep trailer behind a 4 x 4 should be fine. We have a Kubota compact tractor, its fab. We had an older one before this and that was great too but wasnt quite powerful enough in the end. But they run forever. The first one was 20+ years old and we still got £1000 for it!!
