My boy got his foot caught if some electric tape a week ago last Friday. I brought him in cleaned it up and called the vet. On their advise I put a dressing on it and turned him out so that it would reduce the swelling. Next morning when I took the dressing off there was a lot of yellow gunk there so I cleaned it up again and called the vet again. I spoke to my vet who said I should let the air at it and but on some blue spray and a course of antibiotics do I drove to the vets and picked up some. He finished the course last thursday. And it seemed to be healing quite well (his leg no longer filing and not lame) then on Friday two horses appeared on the field next door and he went a bit mad galloping around in the wet grass and half the scab was hanging off but not ready to come completely off do I cut off the bit that was hanging and put on some more blue spray. Then today I came across the above and contacted the vet again. He asked me to send him a picture which I did and he said to scrub the scans off daily and put on some wound cream. I did explain that he is not keen on me being anywhere near it. His reply is well leave it then as its not worth getting injured. it will heal eventually as most things do!

It looks as if it is healing well just going through a stage where it looks worse than it probably is, I have found gold label wonder gel brilliant for healing this type of injury, it is easy to apply as it goes on without needing too much contact, you can put some on your fingers and aim generally in the area and some will stick and do its job, as the horse realises it does not sting or hurt it becomes easier to do next time.
If you really cant get to it, it looks as if it will continue to heal now without too much help, just keep an eye on it.

seems to be granulating nicely, Id wack some manuka honey on it, other honey will work but MH is the best and most efficient, it will promote and accelerate the healing and has antibacterial properties. I dont know how the bees manage it, but its flipping brilliant stuff

One of mine has done it a few times. We clean it up, take off any loose scabs and cream everyday and it does look worse for a while but heals well.

I'd do nothing other than put yellow fly cream on it to keep the flies off it.

The above wounds were stapled together where required and fly creamed. You can see the yellow from the fly cream. I never cleaned it - just slapped on more cream. Of course the Vet thoroughly cleaned it when it was first done and she had antibiotics too.

looks to be healing! make sure you don't cover with too much cream or ointment s any discharge can get out. Don't really think flys will be a worry in this weather!

In that first picture he looks like he's had a tattoo :)

I wouldn't scrub the scabs off daily! You run the risk of scrubbing away the tiny amount of repair that will happen every day. Gentle sponging if you must or just squeeze salt water or very dilte Hibiscrub water over it.

The wound looks fairly clean to me, and yes the honeys good, but in This weather id think it would encourage flies and i wouldnt cover this up.
Tbh id slap on some yellow summer fly ointment, and wash with saline solution when horse comes in at night to a clean bed with a light sliver of the same over it while in. I love the stuff and wouldnt be without it
