Tilda got a bit too familiar with some burrs...

This was yesterday evening. After I'd taken all the burrs out and detangled it all, I plaited up her and put her back out, but today she was just as bad. I'm now admitting defeat and buying a fly mask tomorrow, as the combination of fly sprays being useless on her face (even deosect and power phaser) and these burrs has made her feel quite sorry for herself :frown3:

Those burrs!! I have one pony that comes in every day with them tightly matted in his forelock, I can't even see any of the plants in the field :( how does this happen?! I'm sure they just grow in forelocks.. I share your pain :D

That would drive me nuts! Try baby oil - lots of it - to get them out and then leave plaited up to try to prevent!

We have a lot of plants with these burrs in our field. After finding some in manes and tails I thought I'd cut down the offending plants but then I noticed that they are covered in honey bees. Not sure what to do now as I know bees are struggling at the moment!

Oh the dreaded burrs. You've done well to get them out, one year the shetlands came in absolutely full of them, literally every single inch of mane was tangled. They couldn't have made a better job if they'd done it on purpose. After about an hour of fruitless combing I gave up and hogged the pair of them.

Feeling blessed that we don't have any of these! Must be an absolute nightmare :(

But then what are us humans to know, perhaps this is the latest in a new fashion trend sweeping the equine world? :D

I remember the time my old mare came in from the field looking like she had a unicorn made out of burrs! There where so many and it was so matted it was solid, took me forever getting them out. I used a lot of mane and tail conditoner to get them out and kept spraying it in everyday so they would just slide out thankfully.
Luckily my current horse hasn't been at a yard with them but to be fair if he sneezed hard enough what he has of a forelock would fall out :rolleyes3:

:D :D You got them out then. Did it take long?
Ella looks exactly the same, I swear by baby oil the burrs just come apart.
With a fly mask isn't her forelock still going to be outside though?

They were a lot easier than I'd expected to take out!

The top photo is the result after de-burring, and after that I combed it through with mane & tail spray (had no baby oil handy and it seemed to do the trick ok) and plaited her forelock and front part of mane up. Then the next day she was covered almost as badly, with the plaiting bands still on there. Today she only had a couple of burrs and no horrible knotty bits, so I think she's learnt to avoid them. Fly mask is now bought and fitted anyway, it's an over-ears one so her forelock and front section of mane are covered. Hopefully it'll stay on her!

Your photo's did make me smile, sorry. I no longer feel so alone in combating the wretched seed dispersal mechanisms of some plants. No burrs but I have spent feckin hours this week de-balling my bearded collie from goosegrass sticky balls, Im talking hundreds of the bloody things. Then just to really pee me off he rolls in fox poo!
