Back when i was 13, 14, 15 and 16 yrs old i qualified for HOYS each year, it was an amazing experience, and one i wouldn't mind aiming for again...

What would i have to do to qualify for say the Newcomers championships there??

4 double clears at any BSJA show
then win a second round???
anything after that? or would the second round qualify you??
also, how big would the second round be, and how big would it be at HOYS ??

I think in the 2nd rounds 2 qualify, or possibley 3 depending on starters, but could be wrong on that. 2nd rounds are run over 2 rounds with a jump off if necessary. I think you should expect to be jumping a healthy 140.... Have you told Ernie?!

1.40???

no way.. i was expecting a 1.35 max...
Am sure Ernie would love it tho!! he happily jumps at the top of the wings

Newcomer 2nd rounds start at 1.25, so if it went up 2 holes each round it could easily be 1.40+ in the JO. And its against the clock too.

The top 2 placings qualify direct to HOYS then the next 5 (I think) qualify for the festival where there is another chance to qualify for the final.

i jumped them this year and they are huge in the last round.
process is 4 double clears first round
then onto second round where the top 2 (or 3 cant remember) qualify directly for hoys and depending on the size of the entry about 6 to 8 people qualify for scope festival.
you can jump in only 3 second rounds and if you manage to qualify for scope there are 3 last minute tickets up for grabs there.
hope that helps

So all in all... not a hope in hell!!! haha.. would be a nice aim tho!!
I was thinking 1.35 would be ok, but 1.40 was pushing things a bit!! but then it's only 5cm.. i know i know it doesn't work like that!!

Not only is it 1.45 ish in the final round but you need to be happy doing handbrake turns into all the fences as well.

You should try to qualify for Scope that is a fab show with a brilliant atmosphere and just like HOYs you have velvet curtains to ride thru

handbrake turns are cool, we're fine with them.. it was just the 1.40 thing i wasn't so fine with.. and now you're saying 1.45 which i'd be even less fine with haha...
I'm still aiming for it tho!!! i ride better when i'm sh!tting myself!!

agree with diesel, scope is fab (except for the alcohol ban this year, not impressed!)
a nice 1.15 open class, grade c classes the lot.its my HOYS until i have a fortune to buy a horse good enough for the real thing!!

They banned alcohol!!!!!! That was the best thing, sitting in the bar looking over the railings and watching SJing all night.

LOL! It's not the handbrake turns in isolation that are thd problem...it's hanbrake turn back to 1.40m oxer on 1 stride that is !

Seriously though, if you look at the line-ups for these HOYS finals you see the same horses jumping the NC's, Fox Final and 6 or 7yo final....and probably the Grade C as well ! They're often jumping in the World Young Horse Champs too. Seriously tough competition.

I jumped a Fox second round when I was about 14....and sh1t it was big

They are very big in the second rounds. These are run over 3 rounds and the 3rd round is timed and fast. It may say for Novice horses but most are on there way to Grade A, if not already there by they time they jump them. Trainers horse was 5th in his Foxhunter 2nd round and it was over 1.50cm in the jump off. We watched the Fox Final at HOYS this year and the last fence, which alot were galloping to was 1.52cm! That is a big fence on a supposedly novice horse! But then again the 6 year olds was over 1.40cm at the final, in fact the course builder said he was putting it down for the next international class!!

Nice to have something to aim for, which is what it is all about.

I personally hate SCOPE and would avoid the show at all costs. Horrible and very expensive!
