My OH is just getting into horses, they seem to like him! They always go over to him from the fields at the yard where I ride, and they stand and let him give them a good scratch, then they watch him take snaps of my riding
They also choose to slobber over him and not me which I'm not envious of!!
My hubby is none horsey too. My boy licks him to death, his head, hair, arms, everywhere!
Hubby helps me on a Friday get all the horses in and now picks out feet too. He has had a go of my boy but couldnt walk after about 5 mins riding at walk
Im single but I went out with a bloke who had no interest, he took me up to do my mare and refused to get out the car. Then he was at mine and I went on to HHO and he said "oh god how boring". Needless to say he didn't last very long!!
hes ridden Ben in a small park and ben desided to take off with him very funny as i said if your going to trot hes fresh OH said he wasnt going to then whent from walk to gallop but he never came off! aint been back on yet but he will!
He catches Ben for me and turns him out again helps around yard hes up there 5 out 7 days a week with me
I've only been back to riding for five weeks (one day a week) and he comes every time. He does drive me there and back as I don't drive yet (learning) so I guess it was inevitable but he doesn't have to do it
Mine might read this & recognise himself as he dips in now & again.
In 20 years he never took any interest other than not minding how much time I spent with them- for which I an eternally grateful and from reading some threads I realise I am very lucky- Thank-you
Last year we bought our own land & stables and he wouldn't stay away and as others have said, they do love him
I think its because non horsey OH's make no demands & ask no questions of them
How to do it? got him a quad & trailer- boyz toyz!!!
Can now be found poo picking, fencing etc etc
Not quite got him riding yet - mainly due to 'what do I do with the bitz ' problem- I haven't got an answer to that one!!!
So to all you out there, it takes time & a bit of bribery
Just like handling the horse- some are very trainable, some you never quite get there, and some you just have to change them for another LOL
Rhee - Just tell him to wear a jock strap to start with, keeps things out of the way while your learning. As he develops his seat, his hips will angle back and the problem will go. I learnt at 30, wore one for the first 2 years!
Yes, my OH has a very special rapport with FB after he spent a nightmare few hours on the side of the road with him after the accident. They are mates as long as OH stays on the ground, if he is riding FB considers OH to be a total pillock and gives him the runaround - very funny!!!
Mine is totally unhorsey but will put him in/out for me in an emergency. After 13 years he still can't tie a leadrope and has to really think about how to put a headcollar on. My current horse isn't too bothered, but my old one thought it was great fun to make an extra special effort to show him how great horses can be. He was a bolshy git who would spin round, and flick his shoulder out to knock you off balance and run off whenever he felt like it and my other half decided he was only doing it as I am small and weak and that he, being a big strong man could stop him. You can imagine how much I laughed when Eb went cantering across the field with 17 stone of rugby player hanging on to the end of the leadrope trying to keep up!
My boyfriend is the same but will go every time with me to the yard and has been on my 4 year old, who then went from walk to gallop and never feel off!!!! He has been on again tho so must be doing something right
Unsuitable Chestnut Arab knows very well that if I bring a chap to the yard (OH or my Dad - I don't have a string of them!) they will be the ones that don't ask for any work beyond follow-my-leader style 'join up' for play and are carryign the treats... so I don't get too jealous if he greats them first...
My OH is non-horsey but he tries. last week I came back from the toilet at the yard to find my mare standing in the middle of the yard with a bit in her mouth and bridle half over her head and OH standing with various straps in his hands looking very confuzzled! Luckily she was patient with him and didn't do off! Another time he tried to take her rug off in the stable and forgot to undo the leg straps! Nightmare, she's really spooky and shot around the stable in circles till I could calm her down enough to get it out from around her legs! He'll not be doing that again. He doesn't ride as he's too big for the arab but he's on a diet and maybe once he feels comfortable he'll get on for a bit (probs not long as she's not really a good beginner's horse!)
My non-horsey hubby is fab! He had no interest in horses before meeting me & doesn't come to the yard often in summer unless I need a hand with something or the weather is really bad & I want to get done quikcly, but in winter he helps me turn ours out & muck out every morning!
It's hilarious as the little old shetland mare runs rings round him - every morning they have a fight cos every morning he says she'll be good & do as he asks & every morning she proves him wrong - when will he learn?!
Big lad loves him but I think that's cos every time he sees him he has food...! Hubby loves big lad but has no interest in ridng, the one time I got him on board he fell off dismounting & landed on his bottom as he didn't cock his leg over to dismount so ended up trying to do splits!!!! It provides endless amusement for me...!
I must add that he actually bought Bailey for me for Christmas one year when he had a really good bonus & bought me a new saddle the following year out of his bonus! I really can't complain!
ETS - we went to Heavy Horse Centre in Cumbria for a ride & hubby actually had a good time I think...
My hubby is not horsey at all.
He used to go riding when he was a child but then started having an allergic reaction to them!
He now lives on benadryl........He has to dose up every weekend as I go to the stables every saturday and then every other week our two boys have riding lessons!!
Bless him
