Hi

Just been down to see pony and he has a huge graze on his back leg, its not bleeding but looks really horrible, he doesn't appear to have trouble standing and it doesn't look overly swollen. Its my daughters pony and i'm not particulaly horsey, any suggestions of what to do?

Thanks

S

I would just v gently rinse with salt water (an old clean fairy bottle is v handy for squirting into tricky to reach places without rubbing sore bits) and leave it be. If you would rather cover it then a thin smear of wound cream would do nicely (or human stuff like germolene if you don't know where the horsey stuff is). Do you know what caused it? After attending to the graze I would just check out the stable/field and any rug he has on.

He's on working livery atm and got bought in by someone else, I noticed the fur had gone on the area when I got there last night but it wasn't an open wound if you know what I mean. I wonder if he slipped coming in and the girl didn't say anything because I can't believe she didn't notice it. Anyway he was fine to be ridden ate his tea and I put sudocream on it and today all the furs gone and you can see white 'skin' underneath.

I was thinking about cleaning it in salt water and wrapping in a banage to keep clean, stupid question but can I bandage it like a human?

If it's just a graze and not an open wound, I would leave it tbh. There aren't any flies about (in our area anyway) and putting cream on will be more than enough.
Unless it's a nasty cut, I don't tend to bandage them.

Is there anyone experienced on the yard who can give you advice? Or can you get a photo to show us?

Here's Fidley's cut - at this point she was still mostly unhandled and there was noone to hold her anyway. (I'd had her 2 weeks) it had no treatment at all and there is no scar etc.
