Our elderly mini shetland has come in this morning with her eyelid hugely swollen. There is also some yellow discharge coming from it. Its so swollen you can hardly see the eye but she is still eating and doesn't seem distressed. Ive phoned the vet and am waiting for them to come. Would you try and do anything in the meanwhile to reduce the swelling? I've no idea what she has done to herself, maybe its a kick?

Our old girl gets this occassionally and it's always a vet job. She normally has a tiny piece of hay or debris in the eye which has led to a tiny scratch and conjuctivitis (sp?). Knowing my girl well I bathe it with luke warm water gently but don't try doing too much until the vets been. Normally we get some cream and much improved within 24 hours and all better within 3 days.

That would make sense! She has had a remarkable recovery now the vet is about to arrive and has escaped from the garden and is standing on the muck heap! The eye looks cloudy but the eyelid is open so panic over, cause she is old everytime there is a problem I think its curtains..

Vets just been. Its a trauma injury and has formed and ulser round it. Antibiotics, anti inflamatory and a shot of pain killer. Poor little pony the vet hopes she will be ok but has also confirmed she is pretty much blind so will have to see how she gets on in the next few days..
