Looking for a bit of advice about my mare. She came in from the field with huge hocks, both very swollen around the sides and front , a little heat but hardly noticeable, and not obviously lame at present.
Next door we have a mini stallion that escaped and was in with the mares, I fetched them in early but it could have been chasing them all night. The mare was kicking out and getting very agitated. She stood in all day then when we went to turn her out, she was incredibly stiff and obviously lame in walk, more so on her right and taking short steps. Kept her in that night, in the morning still swollen and lame, had the vet but he said it was too early to tell anything and to leave a week in the field and see. A week later still swollen but no lameness, lame with flexion but otherwise fine. Vet out again and on bute for a week, he said no point rushing to x ray with low level lameness. He said judging by the swelling it didn't seem typical of arthritis as the skin was thick and the swelling would be on the joint if it was that. Hocks just not going down at all :( thanks for reading, any suggestions welcome! Will post photos later

Have photos but can't upload til later when I'm on the pc. It's not capped hocks, the hock at the back is fine and I assume the vet would have said if it was? Unless they can present differently

bog spavin (excess fluid from the joint capsule) to side and front of hocks or thoroughpin (inflammation from the tendon sheath) more to the sides of the hock? Both can be caused by strain to the hocks in someway? My mare has a large thoroughpin as a result of an injury to her DDFT and from her SDFT coming off the point of her hock.

Right finally have photos to upload.. will post in a second. That sounds a bit more like what she has First Flame, it was immediately after the stallion got in, maybe she bucked with a lot of force and strained the hocks? there is no fence or wall for her to kick, its hedge lined

Still swollen so vet will be coming out again, but he didn't seem to have any idea what it was and next route will be x rays. Would really like to have an idea what it is though !

My 2 year olds hocks looked like this when he fell over having a hooley in our indoor. I actually heard him hit his back legs together (his back end went from under him as he tried to motorbike round a corner) he seemed fine but the next day both hinds were huge by his hock, like yours. I was terrified and thought that was it. Had the vet out (it was Christmas day!) trotted up sound. vet gave a weeks worth of bute, said to cold hose daily, box rest for a few days then ten minutes in hand walking (difficult with a fresh 2yo!) he also advised to bandage hind legs. vet said if he showed any signs of lameness I was to get him out again. Thankfully he was never lame throughout it all, sometimes walked out a little stiff at first but that was down down to the amount of swelling. Took about two weeks to go completely, vet came to see him on a pre arranged yard visit and said he was perfectly fine and put the swelling down to trauma, a bit like us banging a boney part!
Hope you find some answers and it's as simple as my boy. They like to worry us!
