As question. If horse has developed a huge Thoroughpin (fluid filled swelling beside hock bone), the size of a tennis ball both sides of the hock, will it go down without veterinary intervention?

Or will it go down with medication?

The horse in question has had it about a month and is possibly still being worked

Thanks

My daughter's 15.3hh 6yo (he's now 9) IDXTB gelding developed a similar sized thoroghpin just before PC Camp three years ago. It was huge! My vet, in whom I have a great deal of faith, injected the site with a drug (I cannot remember the name of it) and it seemed to recede before my eyes! Within days it had disappeared completely, and has never returned (touch wood!)........HOWEVER.......my daughter's other pony, a 14.1hh Section D (now 14, at the time of the thoroughpin 9 or 10) was treated similarly by withdrawing the fluid, and then injecting a drug (sorry, again unknown since this was some time ago). Although the swelling disappeared initially, it has since returned (probably after about a year or so) but it has never affected her performance both competing and hunting; she has excelled in both and, despite now being sadly outgrown, she has a home with us for the rest of her life.

Thanks very much keeperscottage. Glad it can be treated these days

A horse I owned about 15yrs ago had a small Thoroughpin which the vet said should be left as nothing could be done about it, which is why I wondered whether this huge one on this horse could be treated. Will tell his owner.

After "rabbiting on" about thoroughpins on two of our horses (as per my message above)......I've just noticed that our new nag, Keeper's Cottage, a 7yo 17hh ex-point-to-pointer (he was useless - but he's great for our purposes!!!) has a HUGE thoroughpin on his off hind hock! He's totally sound, so I shall ignore it for so long as he remains so!
