Human drug used in horses when they tie up

Can anyone remember the name of the human drug given to horses when they tie up? Something like damadrim???

Dantrolene definitely rings a bell... I was speaking to an equine vet (who does alot of the racing/eventing yards in Cornwall/Devon who said every horse that he's treated it with- some with a history of regularly tieing up- hasn't tied up since...

Yep dantrolene, wifey's horse swallowed a lot last year. Its used to treat malignant hyperpyrexia in humans ( a reaction to certain drugs whereby the body's core temp goes up and effectively cooks from the inside)

From what I've read about Dantrolene, I *think* it works by affecting calcium build up (amongst other things).....this could then work in horses where their tying up is caused by excess storage of calcium (usually race horses/very fit event horses)....however, not sure if it would have the same effects in horses where it is caused by other factors?? ie: polysaccride (sp) storage myopathy

Yes Dantrium is the brand name. It should be out of the horse's system before they compete, check with your vet, they should know how long that would take.
