So today, whilst opens a new haylage bale I managed to slice the top of my thumb off!! So my friends rushed me, dripping blood, to the tack room with the first aid kit - that was woefully inadequate. So much so, I have now got a thumb bandaged with animallintex and vetwrap!!
We all have a great first aid kit for our horses, but what do we need for us humans?

It is the same in our stable, no one pays attention to keeping the human first aid kit stocked. I always keep one in my part of the tack room and another in the car, and am careful to replace any items I use.

After an incident years ago with my OH where we didn't have any of the stuff we needed, we have a very well stocked one.

I had to take a photo of it for my remote farm assurance audit last week, so436509.jpg

I found a list for farmers and got everything online. Obvious stuff is eye wash, antiseptic wipes and bandages. We also have some extras like a tick remover, burn dressing etc. The inside of the door has phone numbers and location details (coordinates, eircode, what4words).

Easy tick in the box for the farm assurance this year, we already had it well covered.

If it is dripping blood you need to apply pressure to stop it. Vetwrap is fine but I think a clean tissue or a bit of fabric is probably better than a poultice. May be add a bottle of disinfectant could be a good thing to have?

All first aid kits should contain similar things, equine or human - the list is endless, there are various fancy dressings on the market, including human glue, steristips for cuts, jelonet. But the basic items should include, in a logical order:
Wounds
something to rinse out a wound eg sterile water, hibiscrub,
something to clean it with eg gauze,
something to cover eg plasters, non adherent dressing, gamgee if bleeding or pressure needed
something to hold dressing in place eg bandage , tape, vetwrap
maybe antiseptic cream (i'm not convinced) wound powder if equine
scissors
gloves

Eyes
eye irrigation
eye patch (or gauze and tape could be used

If cupboard is locked painkillers eg paracetamol or ibuprofen.

I have studied pre hospital trauma A LOT. And all you really need if you dont live in the middle of nowhere up a mountain is something to stop the bleeding, something to clean the wound ( in a and e generally we use tap water ) and an eye wash.. and if youre taking it to the next level a defib and some aspirin. Anything else can wait tbh… but plasters are always very useful… and the first thing to be nicked so keep s big box separate from your first aid kit so that stays clean and sealed.
