Which shampoos do you use on your horses and why?

What shampoo would you recommend for an entirely black horse with lots of feather?

I'm looking to remove all the dirt and grime, and prepare the coat and skin for a show.

i just use supermarket basic shampoo, seems to work just as well as the expensive horse ones, sainsburys have a lovely apple smelling one!

I use either Gallop or Dirty Beastie for horses. I don't use a human shampoo or any sort of detergent/washing up liquid (I had a reaction to a well known shampoo brand myself and I find washing up liquid irritates my hands so I wouldn't put it on my horse)

Both Gallop and Dirty Beastie have colour shampoos and do one for black coats

Washing up liquid is great and then I top up mane and tail (if not plaiting) with tresemme conditioner. I love the redfairy liquid, it smells so yummy. :)

We've always used human shampoo on manes and tails if we ran out of equine ones - which is quite often, as it doesn't seem like a major priority. Washing up liquid too. More rinsing needed though, so I try not to use on bodies.

I tend to just use the left overs from my own shampoos or I just buy a cheap home brand one from the supermarket. I have a grey with a silver streak in her tail and silver shine shampoo (for humans) is amazing :)

i use tesco 20p a bottle value baby bubble bath ,its so good at getting my 2 greys clean and doesnt need too much rinsing and is nice and thick and very gentle-lovely!!

I've heard that some people use Head and Shouders. does anyone have any experience with that?

Yes, I've used it on my traddie boy's legs coz he gets quite scabby and gunky there, and this really seems to soothe him down and stop him itching and fussing with his legs.

Used it on my loan mare - washed her tail with it, but it was maybe not the right shampoo for her as she started itching her tail after I'd used it.

Have bought cheap-and-cheerful supermarket Tea Tree shampoo which seems to be OK for everyone; humans, horses...... plus the dogs!

The cheapest thing in Boots, usually! If I'm feeling more flash, I'll go for a nice smelling one ;)
I usually tails with human shampoo and body with horse shampoo...but I rarely wash all over.

The best thing that I have found for bathing horses is Tesco/Wilko/Morrisons etc cheapo own brand value 30p a bottle shampoo.

This I use the Sainsburys apple ones too you can get the shampoo and conditioner for less than £2.50!

Head and Shoulders 2 in 1. Works brilliantly on the old boys' white tail and I don't have any problems using it on the pony with sweet itch either. You don't need to use a lot and it rinses out really easily. Then Avon Skin So Soft dry oil on the mane and tail to finish when dry to keep the pesky midges at bay.

Did try a dry shampoo (can't remember what it was called though) on the cob's feathers as he hates getting his feathers wet and it was absolutely useless when it came to getting rid of the grease that always seems to build up.

I mainly use the value shampoo from Sainsbury. My boy has a four whit socks and a white mane and tail - for this I use touch of silver, with great results!

My hairdressing friend advised against the use of human shampoo the other day apparently the pH is wrong for the horses skin? Something I'm looking into, but I have used pretty much anything I can get my hands on including fairy washing up liquid and everything seems fine

I use the Johnson's baby shampoo, no more tangles! It's the green one. It is really good on manes and makes their coat shiny, plus not having to worry if it gets in their eyes etc. I don't have to use a conditioner with it really although often use argan oil (Aldi's miracle oil) as my horse has a long mane.

I do use a special whitening horse shampoo on my haffy's mane and tail for showing now (called shimmering white by alto) as it is super good!

I had a grey (white) and used to use whatever was cheapest. Then a local dragon lady, riding school owner, lost her medium dressage horse's tail after her groom used human shampoo on it! With my mare having a lovely full and silky (sometimes rather yellow) tail I never used human shampoo on her again in the next twenty years.

But that was back in the eighties when the tail fell out.

I suspect strongly the reason the tail fell out was nothing to do with the shampoo !
Shampoo is shampoo, the ph of baby shampoo is different to that of normal so it doesn't sting the eyes, suspect animal shampoo is normal ph.
Any doubters out there just compare the ingredients

I use conditioner from Lidl before shampooing. Rub in lots onto the dry dirty hairand it helps the horse shampoo do its stuff without destroying the mane and tail.
